We all know that trends come and go. So how does one go about tackling a challenge such as designing a kitchen, without the worry of your new space feeling outdated before the paint even dries? What makes something “Trendy” versus “Timeless” and how does one go about walking the (at times) fine line between design styles? While trends and fads come and go, we can look at the bigger picture to create a space that is not only stylish, cohesive and functional, but will also stand the test of time.

To achieve a timeless look in your home, you need to look past the latest design crazes, and be inspired but not limited by the latest trends. By incorporating classic, functional, and aesthetically pleasing design elements into your home you can create a space that is not only appealing today but will outlast the ever-revolving cycle of design trends. The interior of our homes should reflect our character and who we are, what we like and what we feel comfortable in.

Blurring the Lines

As in recent years, in 2024 we can expect to see more mixing and matching of design styles in interiors. Rather than certain styles growing or declining in popularity, the lines between the different styles are blurring, In this year’s kitchen trends, you’ll see an interesting mix of styles and perspectives, combining different elements and finishes to create a unique and personalized space.

Mix and Match

One popular mix of styles is that of modern and classic. This can be achieved through incorporating sleek, modern elements like stainless steel appliances and clean lines with traditional elements like shaker cabinets and white or natural toned cabinetry.

Bring the Outdoors Inside

Another style expected to be a major trend for 2024 is Biophilic design, which incorporates natural elements into interior spaces. With this trend you can expect to see more homes with large indoor plants, natural wood finishes, and earthy color palettes that bring the outdoors in. Warm whites, earthy greens, and wood tones can be combined to mimic nature and provide a harmonious feel in the kitchen. Consider bringing in some warm wood elements and natural textures to add warmth and depth to your kitchen.  Colors and textures can be incorporated through cabinetry, paint, tile, or even natural stone countertops.

Rustic Charm

Rustic Charm is a trend that has been gaining popularity in recent years and is expected to continue into 2024. This style is all about creating a warm and inviting atmosphere with natural materials and a cozy, lived-in feel. To achieve this look in your kitchen, consider incorporating elements such as reclaimed wood, exposed brick, and vintage-inspired fixtures. You can also add pops of color with rustic-inspired accessories like woven baskets, ceramic dishes, and colorful rugs. A natural palette is key for achieving a rustically charming kitchen such as warm earth tones like browns, greens, and deep reds.

Back to the Classics

While rustic charm may be gaining popularity, classic designs are still a timeless choice for kitchens. These designs are characterized by clean lines, neutral colors, and traditional materials. When it comes to classic kitchen colors, white and gray are still top choices. These colors create a clean and timeless look that can be easily updated with pops of color through accessories and decor. Again, we often find shaker cabinets making their way to the forefront, with their simple, clean design.  These cabinets feature recessed panels and can either be finished in a wood finish or painted in a variety of colors to fit your personal style.

Changing Appliances

For the past several years, stainless steel appliances have been a staple of the high-end, updated kitchen that most people have coveted. Though this remains a driving trend, now we are also seeing the addition of retro-styled appliances added to the mix. With the added benefit of modern technology, these retro appliances can add elegance and style to your home.

Modern Farmhouse

Another design trend that continues to bridge the gap between old and new is Modern Farmhouse. While historically, farmhouses have not been associated with modernism, they are much adored by many because of their comfort, practicality, nostalgia, and relaxed atmosphere. Modern Farmhouse design takes the comfortable, relaxed farmhouse style and adds a modern twist. With the addition of modern touches such as smooth lines, glossy accents and stainless-steel appliances, this style has continued to evolve, thus retaining its popularity.

Euro Edge

In 2024, we’ll see this style continue to adapt and elevate itself, borrowing aspects from European farmhouse kitchens. Often light and airy, European Farmhouse style combines the relaxed, at-home feel of the traditional farmhouse and mixes in some old-world feel of European elegance. Neutral tones, natural materials, textures, and vintage objects mixed with contemporary design elements like stainless steel appliances, granite countertops and sleek lighting all contribute to the evolution of the modern farmhouse style giving it a timeless, classic look. The combination of classic elements like antiques, hardwood floors, and collectables, melded with the up-to date fixtures and finishes of today can make for a one-of-a-kind kitchen which is comfortable, cozy, efficient and truly is the heart of the home.

A Question of Color

While neutral colors may still be popular across the board, bold colors are also seen prominently in today’s kitchen design. These colors can add a fun and playful element to your kitchen and can be incorporated in many ways, from backsplashes and paint to fun artwork. Another way to add impact to your kitchen is through statement appliances. From vintage inspired stoves to colorful refrigerators, these appliances can add a pop of color and personality to your space.

Conclusion

In 2024, expect to see a mix of rustic charm, classic designs, and a mix of old and new styles being incorporated together. Whether you prefer a cozy and warm rustic look or a clean and timeless classic design, there are many ways to update your kitchen and make it a space you love.
