Our process is detailed and thorough, but also very tailored depending on what our clients need. Generally, we’ll start with an exploratory phone call where we explain the intricacies of the design process (more than we can write here), as well as what to expect moving forward. After that call, we set up either in-person or remote consultations depending on what our client needs. Following this meeting, we begin work on the design.
We always ask that our clients assemble photos and images of spaces that they love, but we also ask them to identify what they love and why in each picture. Based on this information, we are able to understand your aesthetic on a fundamental level. We also spend a good amount of time asking leading questions and carefully assessing your replies – we listen carefully, and that helps us truly pinpoint your personal aesthetic.
Probably! We take pride in being able to work across many different design styles, so it’s a rare day where we come across a style request that we’ve never worked with. But when that does happen, we research, study, and learn to make sure that we can deliver the style you’re after at the highest possible level.
It really depends on the project, but as a rule the design portion of your project will take between 6 and 8 weeks to complete. For clients that want to spend a bit more time evaluating alternate ideas or take the process a bit more slowly, the design will take longer to accomplish. Also, the larger the project, or the more intricate the design, the longer the process can take.
When we have more urgent time-limited requests, we are usually able to accommodate those schedules as well, but within reason. The only thing that is out of our control is how long it takes for the delivery of furniture, furnishings, and other items that we order – we always make sure to keep our clients up to date so that you know what to expect.
Absolutely! We can commission pretty much anything you can imagine, including custom cabinetry, millwork, wallpapers, rugs, fabrics, window treatments, and even light fixtures.
While we can’t provide details here, our fee structures really depend on the type of project. For most projects, there is a flat fee based on room type and square footage, with additional flat fees for specialized items like custom cabinetry design. Other projects are done on an hourly basis. We try to ensure that we put forward the most efficient and effective billing structure for your project so that you’re getting the most for your money.
For a design, we do like creating an entire project simultaneously because we develop an aesthetic and functional momentum based on the cumulative design of your spaces. But that doesn’t mean that we can’t design a space room by room over a longer period of time. Whatever works best for you, we can do. One of the methods that we regularly use is developing a large design that gets implemented over multiple months or even years.
That’s what we refer to as the magic! Once we truly understand both of your individual styles, our job will be creating spaces that have elements that each of you love, and that neither of you dislike. While we can’t guarantee that you’ll both love the same things about a space, ensuring that you both have things that you do love makes the entire experience particularly satisfying for everyone.
When we’re in the design, sourcing, and scheduling phases we are in regular contact via phone and email, with the occasional Zoom session or in-person visit as needed. We don’t want to overwhelm our clients, but we are careful to stay on top of projects since there are so many moving parts.
During construction, or while we’re waiting for deliveries, we’re effectively on call—we wouldn’t reach out regularly unless there are new developments, but we’re always available and there for you throughout in case something comes up.
On particularly large projects, like new home builds, we recommend having a weekly meeting since the complexity of the project really requires a watchful eye at all times.
No, but we do have a baseline of a 5-hour commitment for all projects.
As early as possible! Whether you’re designing a single room or building a new home from scratch, having a professional who understands your personal wants, needs, and tastes that can guide the project from day one is vital to making sure that the project is a success. And, the more time we have to work with you, the better the results tend to be.
During our initial consultation, we’ll use our 3D capture app to scan your kitchen and adjacent spaces. If you move forward with the design from there, we’ll use that scan to create a baseline 3D model of your existing space, and then use that baseline to create a phenomenal design using your wants, needs, and overall aesthetic as parameters.
There are more steps after the initial design to ensure that you’re getting exactly what you want out of your spaces, but our team will be able to walk you through those steps in greater depth on your exploratory call.

When we meet with you, we’ll ask questions about how you want to use your kitchen – how many cooks will be cooking at the same time on a regular basis? How many people do you feed every day? Are you avid cooks or sometimes cooks? Once we understand you as an individual or as a family, we can work through all of the amazing options, products, and solutions that we can create for your kitchen.
The design phase generally takes 6-8 weeks, but there are additional steps such as shopping and sourcing, contractor meetings and selection, and other items that need to be done before construction begins, and those steps often take another 4-6 weeks. For clients that want to spend a bit more time evaluating alternate ideas or take the process a bit more slowly, the design will take longer to accomplish.
Construction then takes between 2 and 4 months, depending on the contractor, the scope of work, and any lead times on materials and products.
Absolutely! We can commission pretty much anything you can imagine for your kitchen, including custom cabinetry, custom cabinet door insets (glass, meshwork, etc.), millwork, countertop designs, stone sinks, and even light fixtures.
While we can’t provide details here, for most kitchen projects there is a flat fee based on square footage, with an hourly component for sourcing/shopping and site meetings. Yes, and we have access to some phenomenal manufacturers that we can’t wait to share with you!

So many kitchen designers sell cabinetry—they work for the cabinet manufacturer, so they are tied to their products. As a bespoke interior design firm, we are not tied to any specific manufacturer or product, and our goal is to deliver the best possible results using the entire palette of products and options, not just a select few.
No! While there are some architects who are well-versed in kitchen design, there are so many who are not. At Design by the Jonathans, we are expert kitchen designers with a keen understanding of how our clients use their spaces, and we take a more holistic approach to the design of your space, understanding not only day-to-day use but also how the kitchen fits into your home overall.
On the occasions where we need to make complex structural adjustments to your home (opening multiple walls, etc.) we bring in architectural or engineering consultants to verify the structural changes and stamp them for approval at your local building department.

When we meet with you, we’ll ask questions about how you want to use your bathroom – how many people will it serve every day? Is it public-facing or private? Do you have any specific needs, such as aging in place, that would influence the way you would use this space in years to come? Once we understand you as an individual or as a family, we can work through all of the amazing options, products, and solutions that we can create for your bathroom.

So many bathroom designers work out of a plumbing showroom, so they are tied to the products that are sold there.
