The dining room is an under-appreciated space in so many homes. If designed properly, it is a space where family and friends can gather to share meals and create memories. As such, it's important to create a space that is not only functional but also visually appealing. Whether you're starting from scratch or looking to refresh your current dining room design, these essential tips will help you create a stunning and inviting space.
Tip 1: Choose the Right Dining Room Table
The table is the centerpiece of any dining room, so it's important to choose one that not only fits your space but also reflects your personal style. Consider the size and shape of your dining room when selecting a table. Round tables are ideal for conversation – everyone can be heard and no one is left out - while a rectangular table offers size versatility and can usually accommodate more guests. If you have the space, opt for a larger table. This makes for more comfortable and relaxed seating, and also lets you set out food and decorations without cramping the tabletop space.
Tip 2: Mix and Match Dining Chairs
Gone are the days of matching dining sets. Mixing and matching dining chairs can be a fun way to add visual interest and personality to your dining room. Consider using different styles, colors, and textures to create a unique and eclectic look. Just be sure to keep some element of cohesion, such as using chairs with similar heights or materials.
Tip 3: Consider Swapping Spaces
I’ve had clients tell me that they never use their formal living room anymore. You may consider turning your formal living room into a large dining room instead, which may get more use (extra bonus if you happen to have a fireplace).
Tip 4: Lighting
Lighting is an essential element in any room, and the dining room is no exception. Be sure your chandelier is not hung too high or too low over your table. 32”- 36” above the tabletop is ideal. Consider installing a dimmer switch to adjust the lighting to fit the mood of your meal.
Tip 5: Add a Statement Piece
A statement piece, such as a chandelier or a large piece of artwork, can add a touch of luxury and personality to your dining room. Just be sure not to overwhelm the space with too many statement pieces, as they can compete with each other and create a cluttered look.
Tip 6: Don’t Forget Serving and Storage
A buffet or sideboard is always helpful for a buffet style meal or a drink station as well as serving as additional storage. For smaller dining rooms, a bar cart can do the trick!
Conclusion
Creating a gorgeous and comfortable dining room design doesn't have to be a daunting task. With these tips in mind, your dining room will become a space that you and your guests will love to spend time in all year round.
